Congratulations to the Magic 7th grade girls as they capped off another successful trip to the AAU Division 1 National Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
After an early loss in pool play, the girls were able to overcome some key injuries to win the next two over squads from Tennessee and Western PA and advance to the Championship Bracket. After dropping a tough 12 point decision to the National Champions, they bested teams from West Virginia and Ohio to reach the 10th place game. There they met the Boo Williams Red Tide, and after a dominating first-half shooting performance, they held on to win, earning their second straight finish in the top ten and bring home a coveted AAU National Championship trophy for the second straight year. |
Two Teams Medal at 2014 MAGIC Invitational
The Magic 6th and 7th Grade Teams traveled to the prestigious MAGIC Invitational in Ellicott City, Maryland. The 6th grade squad rolled to three straight victories to reach they final, where they faced a formidable PA Dynamite team, ranked 4th in the nation. Though the game was tied with just four minutes to play, the Dynamite trimmed the Magic girls, who earned silver medals for the second straight year.
The 7th grade team advance through a challenging series of bracket play games to reach the semi-finals versus the Maryland Belles. The Magic fell short in this 58-52 battle, but then overcame the West Virginia Thunder to garner the bronze.

Pool Play Recap
After weathering a somewhat slow start in Game 1 versus the Longs Island Lightning, the 6th Grade came away with its first win by a score of 29-18. This low-scoring affair helped the Magic shake off their early tournament nerves and bear down for Game 2, where they faced the athletic, formidable Memphis Elite.
In a hard fought test of skill and aggressive moves to the basket, the Magic emerged victorious; the final score was 46-38. The stage was set for a showdown between the only two remaining undefeated squads left in Pool G. In a game that was knotted at 21-21 heading in to the third quarter, the Magic was able to pull away inch by inch to an 11-point victory over last year's 7th place finishers. This win landed the 6th grade Magic in first place and a spot in the Championship Bracket.
Bracket Play Recap
The Magic then faced off against a fast athletic CBC-Boyd team from North Carolina in the Sweet Sixteen. CBC was up one at half, then took off on an early run in the 3rd to take an 18 point lead. The Magic battled back to cut the deficit to 6 for the start of the 4th, but CBC pulled away to a 12-point lead with under a minute to play.
The Magic 6th grade refused to go away, however, and mounted a furious comeback in the last minute that put the game in reach at 64-61 with 23 seconds left. Unfortunately, the gutsy effort came up a little short, and the Magic lost 66-61. The Magic 6th then had to re-focus for the first round of Championship Consolation play to work towards their new goal of a top ten finish. On Thursday morning, they faced Jump Athletic from Arizona and registered a 12-point victory, getting one step closer to the top ten.

(Magic 6th - continued)
After a brief rest, the Magic 6th took the floor again in a dogfight against the St. Louis Team Adidas 2019. Through great defense that stunted the scoring and set a pace that favored the Magic, they were able to grind out a 33-26 win to stay alive to play on Friday, the final day of the tournament. Just one win stood between them and a top ten finish against the Nation's toughest competition.
Friday morning saw a rematch of an earlier season back-and-forth contest that saw the Magic 6th edge the Boo Williams Red Tide by 1 with a layup in the final seconds of the M.A.G.I.C. Classic Championship. This time, the Magic was able to build an early 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter and hang on for a 50-43 win over the Tide, guaranteeing a Top Ten spot and an opportunity to play one final game in the tournament to determine the 9th place finisher. The final game of the tournament pitted the Magic 6th against the Triangle Tarheel from North Carolina. Both teams had worked their way through the bracket after Sweet Sixteen losses, and both teams, though battle-weary from seven tough games, were determined to win one more before heading home.
The Magic jumped out to a slight lead early and held it throughout the game until the final minute, when the Tarheel made a run to take a 1-point lead with 42 seconds to play. After a defensive stop, the Tarheel scored again to increase their lead to 3 with under 30 seconds left. The 6th grade Magic steeled their resolve, and with poise, patience and textbook execution, knocked down a 3-point shot from the corner to tie the game with just seconds to play, sending the game into overtime. The Magic regained the lead early in the extra period and held on to win in OT by a score of 45-42 to claim a 9th place finish. |
