Wendy Young
Wendy Young began coaching basketball at Somerton Youth Organization in 2001 with the intra-mural program, and became a travel coach in 2003, though she still remained active in the in-house program as Commissioner of the 6-7 year old girls. Her travel teams have won numerous league and tournament championships in both Northeast Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs and claimed several undefeated seasons. This year, she coaches both the 2nd and 3rd grade girls travel teams.
Wendy has been coaching AAU basketball for seven years, beginning in 2004 with Fencor’s 10C team. After that, she spent three years with the Northeast Rockers at the 9U level, earning a Middle Atlantic District medal in all three seasons, including championship gold in 2007. She took two teams to top ten finishes at Division 1 AAU National Championship tournaments, including a medal-earning 7th place finish in Ft. Myers, Florida in 2007.
In 2008, Wendy helped found Mid-Atlantic Magic, an organization that boasted four Division 1 qualifiers and three District Bronze Medals for the four inaugural teams. The 10U team, coached by Wendy and her husband, Fran, attended Division 1 Nationals at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida and finished in 7th place in the Classic bracket.
In 2010, the 12U capped a strong 3rd place finish in the region with a trip to Division II Nationals in Rochester, MN. The team garnered some well-deserved attention with their 3-0 performance in pool play and 6-1 tournament record, their only loss coming at the hands of National Champions, the LA Swoosh. Their outstanding run earned them 5th place medals and some incredible memories.
In 2011, the 13U was focused on locking down their defense and mastering principles of man-to-man, as well as creating offense that would give them the confidence they needed to carry into their high school seasons. After a disappointing early exit from the DQT, the team rebounded the following weekend with an outstanding run to a gold medal finish at the Lehigh Valley Super-regional, earning a bid to Division 1 Nationals in Orlando, FL. All 11 players made their high school teams, with half of them playing Varsity minutes as freshmen.
In 2012, Wendy started all over with the basics with the 4th grade team. They began with learning fundamental skills of basketball and built up to man and zone concepts on offense and defense. Overall, the team showed a great deal of improvement, wrapping up the season by going 4-0 and winning the Championship in the Little Ballers Tournament of Champions.
This year, Wendy will coach 5th grade and continue to help the girls progress and employ skills learned through drills and practice in game situations. She stresses a need for a strong work ethic, a desire to learn, and physical fitness as three keys to this team’s success this season. Her team will focus on fundamental skills as well as team concepts as they play a national schedule.
